who i am

(I wrote this in 2010. I was getting ready to start another blog post and this caught my eye – as much as I want to edit and rewrite a few things – I’m going to leave it just like it is and post this. Excuse the bad formatting on the blog re-vamping takes me longer than it used too. I’ll get around to that soon enough. I am often asked who Lesley is because most everyone who knows me knows my real middle name is not Lesley – so this is the story of who Lesley is and why I use that name. The stunning woman is my mother’s mother and the unbelievably handsome guy is my grandaddy Lesley.)

I am a lot of things. I am a mother of twins. I am a mother that lost babies I desprately wanted. I will forever be a different kind of mother because of that. I am a dancer. I am a bad runner because I was a dancer. I am an artist. I am a photographer. In spite of my own beliefs in my abilities, am told I am a writer. I am a total nerd. I am parts of my past, but not completely any of those parts. I am parts of all the people I love. I am unfortunately a little bit cynical, but ever hopeful and expect the best before the worst, even if I know the worst is a possibility. I am completely and utterly devoted to the people who have done that for me, run into the fire devoted. I am lucky enough to know true love. I can be fearless, but am still afraid of the dark sometimes. I am not afraid to ask for help. I have been taught many things by the people I am surrounded by, but mostly, if you simply accept poeple for who they are, you will be amazed by what they are not afraid to show you, simply because they know they can. I am a terrible joke teller, but a great laugher if you want to tell me one. I am a constant surprise and adventure, I like being around other people who are those things too. I don’t enjoy confrontation, will never be great at debate, but won’t back down when it’s important to me. I’ll get messy.

I value anything authentic, strong, and honest. I have seen a one pound baby beat the odds, have been with a family as they have taken their precious child off life support, watched my friends rise to the occasion in every way, I have seen all of those qualities I value in immeasurable ammounts in the people I am around, I am a better person for it.

Lesley is my mom’s maiden name. I always thought if I had another child one day, Lesley would be part of the name somehow. So, the path your on turns sometimes when you’re not looking, Lelsey became part of my business name. I think it’s fitting because some of my favorite childhood memories were with the Lesley family. I have a great heritage (from both sides of my family) – it’s awesome to reflect that here, while I capture moments like those for the families I work with.

I am just a girl, normal in every way, except not. Just the same way I see life around me. Everyday extraordinary.

My posts are so short lately – I don’t really like that. I have so much to say about these children and these families – some of them I have been photographing them FOREVER . But it’s the holiday season – that means I’m just crazy short on time – but it’s no reflection of how I feel about them. This gorgeous family is so precious to me. Their oldest and my twins were born just a few weeks apart – I met them about a month or so after all the babies were born. A lot of life has passed between then and now. For all of us. I’ll save the words for another time – just get a look at this. Just a bunch of love. The good stuff.

A quick peek from the beautiful property of my friend and sorority sister Paige. I’ve known her since I was 18, she was one of the first people I met at Tech. I was lucky enough to live in the same city as her for 8 years and be right down the street from each other as we had our children. Now we live only an hour away from each other and I could not be more blessed by her friendship. She is always a positive force in my life. I used to get to watch her oldest a few times a week when all our babies were little – I will always cherish that I got to spend that kind of time with that baby girl.

Four families in one night – We were busy! It was super fun! I predict amazing holiday cards in store for all of these families!

Well. She’s only in third grade – but I swear third grade is the new 13. This girl makes my day. This morning on the way to school she was giggling at a (really nice) lady who was “fast walking”. Why on earth would she walk like that when she could just run? she wonders aloud as she’s laughing. I posed it was possible she had a pocket full of hamsters and didn’t want to jiggle them around too much. More giggles. :) I just love my funny silly kids. I’m trying to remember what it was like to be nine and carry around adult sized text books and back packs and maneuver a part grown up and part kid world.

The story behind this picture. We headed out to the hill country last weekend for some back to back sessions at my beautiful friend’s property, I wanted to get our card picture out of the way too – so I threw in the clothes I wanted, etc. Well, those things never go according to plan, lol – so what was supposed to be a few minutes in those clothes ended up being a couple hours. Would you like to guess how she felt about that? I’m totally using this on my Christmas card this year – no redos – I love it. It completely encapsulates this moment in time for our family. My moody boy has come around and I’ve got my laid back, hippy haired boy again, just in time for his sister to start in on the sass fest. He still jumps out of the car in the morning with one last look back at me before shouting out “love you mom” and running off to take on third grade. I wonder how much longer I get that? And then there’s this girl, lol – who is not delighted in the least to have waited in these clothes to have her picture taken, and I wonder how much longer I get that too!?
